Graceling

Author: Kristin Cashore

Genre: fantasy

Graceling takes readers inside the world of Katsa, a warrior-girl in her late teens with one blue eye and one green eye. This gives her haunting beauty, but also marks her as a Graceling. Gracelings are beings with special talents—swimming, storytelling, dancing. Katsa's Grace is considered more useful: her ability to fight (and kill, if she wanted to) is unequaled in the seven kingdoms. Forced to act as a henchman for a manipulative king, Katsa channels her guilt by forming a secret council of like-minded citizens who carry out secret missions to promote justice over cruelty and abuses of power.

Story Overview

"In the seven kingdoms, there are some children who are born different. They are marked with eyes of two different colors, and they are called Gracelings. Gracelings have abilities beyond the natural, and they are feared and shunned by most people. There are many different Graces—some are benign, like the Grace to swim long distances, or to juggle. And some or deadly.

Katsa, niece to King Randa of Middluns, has a killing Grace. Since she was a small child she has been able to kill a grown man easily with her bare hands. She lives as King Randa’s enforcer—he sends her to maim, torture and kill those who defy him.

But Katsa has a secret. Far from just being King Randa’s mad dog, she is also a part of a secret Council that does its best to watch over the seven kingdoms and bring justice and right to its people. When a Council mission brings her face to face with Po, a Lienid prince Graced with combat skills, Katsa has met her match for the first time. Po isn’t afraid to meet her mismatched eyes. And Po can match her in a fight, blow for blow.

Together, Katsa and Po begin an investigation into a mystery that has deadly roots in the most unexpected of places, and they will face a terrifying enemy who can confound even Katsa's Graced skills.

At stake is nothing short of the fate of all seven kingdoms."

Synopsis from Here

"Katsa is a Graceling, one of a rare group of people born with a special and extreme skill. Some have talent with plants or animals, some are skilled at physical activities, some can influence others or read minds. Her unique talent puts her at the mercy of doing the bidding of her uncle the king as little more than a thug. She balances the distaste of hurting people with subversive political activities, creating alliances within the seven kingdoms, and finds herself at the heart of unraveling the plot to kidnap King, after she and her friends have rescued him."

Excerpt from Here

Important Characters to Know
(as they are mentioned; or some similar sort of order)

(Lady) Katsa - Ah, yes. Our heroine. Everyone's pride and glory. Graced with Killing, or so she thinks. Later we figure out that her grace isn't killing, but it is Surviving. She has one blue eye, and one green eye. (TBC)

Oll - One of Randa's highest ranking soldiers, whom accompanies Katsa when she is commissioned to do Randa's bidding.

(Lord) Giddon - The other young man whom accompanies Oll and Katsa, and seems to see a love interest in Katsa. He even "asks" her to marry him so that he could protect her.

(High Prince/Grandfather) Tealiff - The Kidnappee, if that's a word, though I doubt it. Kidnapped, dragged halfway across the continent. I'd want some sleep too if I were him! But Tealiff is quite an alright guy! Kind of grandfather any kid would want. Loving to his seven grandsons, even though he never had a chance at the throne of Lienid himself.

(Prince) Raffin - Truly the best friend of Katsa throughout the book, she feels she can pretty much depend on Raffin for almost anything. Raffin often finds himself dawdling in the lab that was linked through a secret passage to his room with his assistant.

(King) Randa - Raffin's father, and Katsa's uncle. Quite disliked king, whom used people for his own bidding. Not much else is to be said, you get the picture if you read the book.

(Prince) "Greening", Po - Our second main character. Pretty much the epitome of a hero, if you get what I'm saying. Saves damsels, gets his butt saved every now and again by Katsa. Ends up being Katsa's lover. He has seven brothers, and he is the youngest. He has one gold eye, and one silver eye. He tells everyone he's graced with fighting, but he's truly gifted with "Sensing" or a sort of mind-reading.(TBC)

Davit - Man that sits next to Katsa at the dinner she attends in chapter seven whom has information about the kidnapping of Grandfather Tealiff.

(Princess) Bitterblue - King Leck of Monsea's daughter, whom is saved by Po and Katsa after they voyage to Monsea. She is ten years old, and proves to be rather brave and mature.

~~~TBC~~~
Chapters 1-10
Chapter One - Katsa was in the middle of her work. She had thirty pills to put all of the guards to sleep. It is learned that Katsa is often used by her uncle. Katsa hates to kill. Katsa's grace emerged when she was eight and killed her distant cousin. Katsa ran into a Lienid boy with the grace of fighting, who surprised her by letting her go. The point of the job was to rescue a Lienid man. They got away without being captured.
Chapter Two - There are seven kingdoms. Said kingdoms are almost always causing trouble for one another. Grandfather Tealiff (the rescued Lienid) was held in Murgon's dungeons, and Katsa thinks it is because Murgon got paid to do it by another country. They got to Randa city and Oll and Giddon stayed hidden in the forest, going to the secret meeting place. Katsa took the old man to Prince Raffin. tealiff commented on her grace. After giving Tealiff over to Prince Raffin, she left as dawn arose.
Chapter Three - Katsa went and found Oll and Giddon sleeping at the meeting place. After being annoyed at them, they desembarked on their way to where they were supposed to be; in the east. They camped out against a large rock crag. We learn that Katsa formed the Council. Katsa reflected on how much good the Council has been able to do. She regrets trusting the Liened boy.
Chapter Four - Katsa, Oll, and Giddon make their way to do their next job for the king, to punish a man that had cut down more lumber than he was contracted for. Katsa found out that the man's daughter was graced with mind reading. They arrived at the Lord's house. the man agreed to paying double the original price. Oll and Giddon went to the counting house while Katsa stayed behind. Katsa decided only to knock out the Lord before leaving because she thought him brave. She had a brief run-in with the graced daughter.
Chapter Five - It rained, and they were stuck at the inn where they had left their horses. It appears that people fear to be approached by Katsa. They are served by a girl named Larie(?). They gossip about news that has happened, learning that they got out free from their earlier escapade to save Tealiff. They plan to set out at dawn to go back to court.
Chapter Six - They arrive back at the castle. Katsa finds out that the Lienid fighter is lurking around looking for his grandfather. She watches the Lienid from the courtyard before she had to leave to get ready for dinner.
Chapter Seven - The beginning of the chapter speaks of Helda coming to work in the nurseries and how she met and became a friend to Katsa. Helda helps prepare Katsa for the dinner. At dinner, Katsa sat between Giddon and Davit, the eligible bachelor of the night. The Lienid prince was also at the dinner. Davit had information for the council. at one point, Katsa couldn't take the dinner any more and blatantly excused herself outside "for a walk".
Chapter Eight - Katsa takes out her anger at the archery range. The Lienid prince shows up and begins talking to her tauntingly. He taunts her for a while before asking about his grandfather. They end up in a fight, but then they realize that they are equal opponents at hand-to-hand combat. The prince's actual name is Po. Katsa Decides to take him to his grandfather.
Chapter Nine - Po is taken to see his grandfather. The Lord Prince thanks Katsa for saving him and fell asleep soon after. The council held a meeting that night to discuss the grandfather's kidnapping. Davit told them that Thypen and Drowden were not behind the kidnapping. Po stays for a while afterwards and made Katsa uncomfortable.
Chapter Ten - Katsa and Po became training partners. Po's eyes unnerved Katsa. Po tells Katsa bits about his home and life. Tealiff wakes up and tells more to Katsa.
Chapters 11-20
Chapter 11 - A lot of drama about Gidden being in love with Katsa. The council met that night. They argued about who was guilty for kidnapping Tealiff. Katsa was caught staring at Po.
Chapter 12 - Randa came to Po's and Katsa's fight and has a job for katsa. Calls Katsa his "Lady Killer". At dinner, Katsa was angered and struck Po. Po wouldn't defend himself from her. Katsa felt guilty. Po wouldn't tell Katsa anything when she asked about his aunt, the Queen.
Chapter 13 - Katsa, Giddon, and Oll go to an estate near Giddon's to punish a man for not giving up one of his daughters. Randa was going to receive the dowry, and the girl was going to be sent to a lord whom she did not know. Katsa remarks that she would like to see the sea to Po during conversation. They didn't want to do the new task. Katsa refused to torture Ellis. They worked out what they were going to claim happened. Giddon and Katsa argued about being married. Katsa realized that Po might be a mind reader of some sort.
Chapter 14 - Katsa busts in and gets angry at Po for lying to her. He apologizes, but she doesn't listen and feels betrayed. Raffin visited Katsa, and talked to her. Po comes to Katsa and tries to apologize. They talk about his leaving, and Po believes Monsea has something to do with the kidnapping. Randa calls for Katsa, and she decides to leave court.
Chapter 15 - Katsa threatens the king, whom now wants her either dead, or in the dungeons. She astonishes all present by deciding to leave the court. She walked out; nobody stopped her.
Chapter 16 - Katsa and Po leave together. Katsa asks Po to tell her everything he's feeling because he knows what she feels. They went around Murgon city as to not get in trouble. They stop and stay at a meadow for the night.
Chapter 17 - Katsa decided she wanted her hair cut off. Katsa has an idea to try to get Po's attention by calling for him in her mind and he is badly startled by it. Katsa kills a goose for dinner by throttling it by the neck, and falling into the lake to a laughing Po. Katsa and Po practice fighting together. Katsa seess tattoos on Po's upper arms. They talked about marriage. Po told Katsa the story about the king of Monsea.
Chapter 18 - They stopped at an Inn. Katsa got upset when merchants bothered a serving girl and stopped them. The merchants came to visit them in the night. Katsa and Po had to restrain each other from hurting the six men badly. They talked about the king of Monsea, and if he could possible be Graced.
Chapter 19 - They left for Leck city. Katsa started thinking about Po in ways that she didn't like, and was upsetted by it. Po admits his feelings to Katsa, and she leaves to think by herself. She comes back, and Po says they don't have to be married. She thinks on this subject after Po is asleep, because she doesn't want him hearing her thoughts.
Chapter 20 - They continued traveling, but then fought to calm Katsa's nerves. They ended up having sexual intercourse in the middle of the forest at night. Katsa took seabane so that she could not be impregnated. They were very happy after this.
Chapters 21-30
Chapter 21 - They talked about Po's rings and his family. They spoke about Leck and whether he had killed people as well. Also talked about his Grace. They also spoke of Katsa's Grace. And she wondered what it really was. She decided her grace wasn't killing, but survival.
Chapter 22 - They arrived at the mountains, and the town where they would leave their horses. They spoke again about Po's family not knowing the nature of his grace. It took them several days to cross the mountains. Po kept making Katsa promise to do whatever he says for when they arrive in Monsea.
Chapter 23 - They kept moving towards leck City. They saw Leck, and Katsa was tricked by him. They were forced to flee. They hid in the forest, and figured out that Leck had killed Ashen. They predicted that Bitterblue was hidden in the forest. They searched for Bitterblue. They found Bitterblue, but had to kill about fifteen soldiers.
Chapter 24 - (Somehow got mixed in with Chapter 23)
Chapter 25 - They stopped when they found a cave on a cliff that they could easily defend. They fed Bitterblue and let her sleep. They decided that they would have to kill Leck. Bitterblue woke, and they spoke of the events that had occured, and how she and her mother were trapped by Leck, and finally tried to escape.
Chapter 26 - Po left, to kill King Leck. Katsa and Bitterblue stayed behind. Po came rushing back at about sunset wounded, and then his horse slipped off of the cliff into the water below. Katsa got Po and brought him up. Po was senseless, but they decided that they must flee.
Chapter 27 - They traveled, hopefully away from King Leck. Po believes that he had killed atleast a dozen men. Po tried to convince Katsa to leave him behind. Katsa finally caved and allowed for Po to be left behind, but only when they found a suitable encampment for him.
Chapter 28 - They found a cave that Po could use to hide in while he was resting. They decided that it was time to leave. Katsa killed qual for dinner, and to make arrows for Po. Katsa left Po fish in and underwater basket. They finally had to leave. Katsa tried to get him to come with them one last time to no avail.
Chapter 29 - Katsa decided that they would need to cross the mountains to avoid King Leck. Katsa thought and believed that they would need to hide their appearances. Katsa decided that they would need to go through Grella's pass. Bitterblue doubted her, but consented to going along with it, since it was the only option. Katsa made clothing for Bitterblue. They released the horse to run wild. Katsa fought and killed a mountain lion. Bitterblue would now have a fur coat to wear in the increasingly cold climate.
Chapter 30 - They struggled up the mountains. they arrived at G?ella's Pass, and Katsa strapped on
snowshoes and carried Bitterblue. They made it through the pass, and Katsa desperately
needed a fire to warm herself.
Chapters 31-Epilogue
Chapter 30 - They struggled up the mountains. they arrived at Grella's Pass, and Katsa strapped on snowshoes and carried Bitterblue. They made it through the pass, and Katsa desperately needed a fire to warm herself.
Chapter 31 - They managed to make it to an inn in Sunder. They bathed, got haircuts, and dressed in boy's clothing. They stayed at the house of a merchant loyal to the council. Katsa decided to pass Po off as dead to everyone so that he would be safer. They were headed to the Ports of Sunder.
Chapter 32 - They arrivedat Sun cliff, the biggest port in Sunder. They check out the ships, and then manage to go onboard a Lienid Ship. The guard is suspicious, but Katsa gives him a gold to take them to their captain. They go crazy when Katsa shows them Po's ring. The captain, Faun, tells them that the rings means that he gave his princehood to Katsa. They now recognize Katsa as a princess. They are accepted onboard.
Chapter 33 - The journey would take 3-4 weeks. Katsa and BitterBlue were enjoying their ride on the ship. Katsa decided that the ship would have to stay at sea and keep away from other people, less they give away Katsa's and Bitterblue's story. Katsa decided to teach Bitterblue how to use her knife.
Chapter 34 - Ror City came into view from the ship. They plan to dock in a bay near Po's castle. Once they arrived at the castle, they were invited inside and found out that King Leck was there.
Chapter 35 - King Leck had been lying to the family about all of them, and had made them think Katsa was holding Bitterblue for her father. Katsa finally listened to her instincts and threw a dagger straight into Leck's open mouth, killing him. Bitterblue was now the Queen of Monsea. Leck was about to reveal Po's grace when Katsa killed him. They finally manage to calm down. Po's mother came to Katsa and Katsa told her that she knew about Po's grace. Katsa and Bitterblue were going to leave in the morning.
Chapter 36 - They were on a ship headed to Po. Katsa took a liking to Skye. Once they arrived, they call for two horses to take Katsa, Skye, and Bitterblue to Po. They were finally on their way. They stopped at inns for meals and sleep along the way. A marksman almost killed Skye, but Katsa pushed him out of the way. They reached Po and had a happy reunion.
Chapter 37 - Katsa and Bitterblue told Po what had happened on their journey. Katsa wanted to return the ring to Po. He wouldn't take it back, wanting her to have a home to go to. Everyone was slowly realizing something was wrong with him. Katsa went after him and asked him if he was blind. He started crying in Katsa's arms.
Chapter 38 - Katsa and Po talked about his time at the cabin and how he coped with it. He had not cared the first few days, but then he wanted to live, and bit by bit, he came out of his shell. Po was wallowing in self-pity. Po worked on making it ,look like he was looking at people. Katsa decided that Po would need to practice fighting again.
Chapter 39 - Po grew stronger as Katsa tought him along with his brother, Skye, and training Bitterblue to use a sword. Bitterblue's coronation came up and Raffin showed up to attend, much to Katsa's surprise. Katsa was going to go and spend her time with Po.
Epilogue - Katsa was going to give fighting lessons to girls in all of the kingdoms. She decided to have a final showdown with Randa before deciding to go to Lienid to be with Po, and teach the girls to fight there.
